1000 Books Before Kindergarten
Stillwater Public Library is proud to be joining hundreds of libraries across the country in offering an on-going reading program dedicated just to our youngest readers/listeners. 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten (aka 1KB4K) is a program designed to encourage families to have read at least a thousand books to their child before they enter kindergarten.

How our program works:
- Sign up to participate.
- You may pick up reading logs in the library or use the free app. Print an extra reading log at home.
- Details about the app and links to download. Please note we are unable to see your data on the app or provide troubleshooting.
- Color or check off a circle on the log for every book you read.
- After reading 100 books, bring your reading log to the library to collect your first prize. Pick up the new pages for your reading log to count more great books.
- At the 500 books and 1,000 book goal, your family will get the gift of a new book to keep! Must pick up all prizes at the Stillwater Public Library.
- We will acknowledge your achievement on our wall of readers located in the storytime room.
FAQ:
Will it take forever to read 1,000 books?
It is not as overwhelming as it seems. Think of it this way: 3 books a day for 1 year = 1,095 books
What if I can't find 1,000 different books to read?
You can read the same book over and over again. Repetition is valuable for young learners. However, the library has hundreds of books just waiting for you to read!
What if we are reading chapter books?
One chapter from a chapter book may count as one book on the tally sheet. Some favorite chapter books for 4-5 year old range are Charlotte's Web, Winnie the Pooh, Beverly Cleary books, Paddington Bear, Betsy-Tacy books & Boxcar Children.
Can my young child be in 1000 Books and the Summer Reading Program?
Yes, children who have not yet entered Kindergarten may participate in both reading programs. However, the prizes and structure for 1000 Books are geared towards children under 5 while the Summer Reading Program is designed for elementary-age children.
