Adults & Teens learn about finances at free "Money Basics" program on April 15

(STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA / March 22, 2021) – The Stillwater Public Library is hosting a virtual "Money Basics" program on Thursday, April 15, 2021, at 6 p.m. Penny Holt, Vice President of Marketing at University and Community Federal Credit Union (UCFCU), will go over topics including budgeting, balancing your accounts, the importance of credit and more.

The program will be most beneficial for individuals who are new to managing finances or have limited knowledge of financial topics. Attendees will learn how to navigate common economic issues and enhance their money management skills.

"It's important to understand how the financial decisions you make today could affect your ability to get a job or find a place to live," said Holt. "Learning how to manage your money can lead to less stress in your life."

According to the Pew Research Center, many young adults are postponing education, home buying, marriage and having children due to their financial situations. Holt believes that being informed is the first step.

"Having a firm grasp on topics like credit scores and debt can help with meeting life goals and getting on track to financial security," said Holt.

The pandemic has also pushed people into new ways of interacting with their money and financial institutions. Holt will touch on understanding these new channels as well.

"More people are using online and mobile services to access their accounts and apply for loans," said Holt. "These services were already in place, but the pandemic pushed many to adapt to virtual interaction sooner than they might have otherwise."

Holt will suggest free resources available to help answer any questions that adults and teens new to money management may have. Additionally, the library has various free booklets from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau on how credit works, debt management and dealing with bills. These are free while supplies last. Numerous books on related topics are also available to borrow.

The program takes place online using Zoom. Please register by April 14 at tinyurl.com/SPLFinanceClass, by calling the library help desk at (405) 372-3633 x8106 or emailing askalibrarian@stillwater.org. Registered participants will receive email instructions on how to join the class.
