How to get published in the newspaper

Stillwater, OK (September 23, 2020) – A workshop will be held at the Stillwater Public Library, 1107 South Duck Street, on Sunday, October 13 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. to provide attendees tips from local newspaper reporters and editors on how to get published in the newspaper.

“The workshop is an outreach of the local ‘We Support Our Local Paper’ organization made up of representatives from local entities such as Centennial Rotary, Frontier Rotary, Stillwater Rotary, Lions, Golden Kiwanis, Friends of the Stillwater Public Library, Stillwater Public Library, Visit Stillwater and the Stillwater Chamber of Commerce,” said Bob Darcy, organization creator. “Our intent is to provide education, as well as helpful tips, to those interested in making submissions to the Stillwater News Press, Perkins Journal, Daily O’Collegian, and other area newspapers.”

Stacy Delano, Stillwater Public Library Director, stated, “The Stillwater Centennial Rotary Club will provide Hideaway Pizza and beverages to those in attendance who are interested in learning about the guidelines for writing and submitting news releases, articles, events, story ideas, letters to the editor, photos, and more.”

The free workshop will provide attendees insight about the history of newspapers, the role of newspapers, and the impact a local newspaper has on a community. Discussion will take place in regard to how the public and newspapers can work together, and why it is important to understand the anatomy of a newspaper to do so.

How to create good articles, news stories, and press releases will be covered, along with the use of AP Style, use of quotations, headlines, news, and photographs. There will also be a panel discussion to enable attendees to interact directly with members of the local media.
