Learn about local art on an outdoor tour with the OSU Museum of Art

(STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA / June 8, 2021) – Get outside, get moving and learn about local art with the Stillwater Public Library and the OSU Museum of Art (OSUMOA). An art walk will take place at OSU’s Stillwater campus on Thursday, June 17, at 6:30 p.m. and last about one hour. The walk covers approximately one mile and is wheelchair accessible. Headsets will also be available to those that need them. Christina Elliott, Associate Curator of Education at OSUMOA, will lead the tour.

The art walk marks the first official adult program for the Stillwater Public Library’s 2021 “NEA Tails and Tales” Summer Reading Program. Event coordinators are happy to be able to host an in-person, outdoor option.

“I’m excited to lead an art walk for the library’s summer reading program,” Elliott said. “I’m sure everyone is ready to spend time outdoors, and the art walk is a perfect way to do that.” 

Elliott will show participants 10 works of art by nine different artists. Attendees will learn about the media used to create the artworks, the subject matter portrayed, as well as background information about the artists. 

Two of the artworks on the walk are by Oklahoma-born Chiricahua Apache artist Allan Houser. Elliott is delighted to share his work with the tour.

“The sculptures on display by Houser show his diverse ability to create figurative works like the ‘Singing Heart’ sculpture as well as more modern works like ‘Abstract Orange,’” Elliott said.

Participants will meet their tour guide at Mother’s Garden, located on the west side of the Atherton Hotel on 110 S. Hester Street. 

The OSU Museum of Art currently has two indoor exhibits, and admission is free.
