Learn about the aging brain and get a free cognitive screening

(STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA / Feb. 22, 2019) –Oklahoma State University’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders is partnering with the Stillwater Public Library to offer an informational program about the aging brain followed by optional cognitive screenings on Wednesday, Mar. 13. “Brain Health: Understanding the Aging Brain” will be presented by Dr. Sabiha Parveen, Ph.D., CCC-SLP and starts at 5:30 p.m. The cognitive screenings will take place from 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.

Dr. Parveen, an assistant professor at OSU and a certified speech-language pathologist, teaches graduate level courses related to language and cognitive changes following stroke, traumatic brain injury, dementia and normal aging. Dr. Parveen thinks that this topic is of particular importance in our community.

“A significant portion of the Stillwater community consists of people over the age of 65 years,” said Parveen. “They may experience changes in mobility, vision, hearing, cognition, or speech due to aging and/or other neurological disorders. It’s important that our community is educated about this topic and know what signs to look for.”

The program will cover brain changes associated with normal aging as well as risk factors that can lead to possible onset of language and cognitive problems following stroke, head injury, Parkinson’s disease or dementia. In addition, Dr. Parveen will provide resources and recommendations to help keep your brain sharp.

Attendees are also invited to sign-up for a free and confidential cognitive screening following the presentation. The screenings take approximately 20-25 minutes to complete and will be conducted by graduate students under the supervision of certified speech-language pathologists.

“Brain Health: Understanding the Aging Brain” is free and open to the public. Registration is required but will be taken up to the day before the program. To register, visit the library’s website at http://library.stillwater.org, email askalibrarian@stillwater.org or call 405-372-3633 x8106.
