Library's used book sale is back with important book browsing updates

(STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA / September 4, 2019) –Readers of all ages will find thousands of items to choose from at the Stillwater Public Library’s fall used book sale on Sept. 19-22. Rooms will be brimming with books, DVDs, and audios priced from 25 cents to $1.

“I love seeing the library’s transformation leading up to the book sale,” said library director Stacy DeLano. “The entire second floor is packed with every kind of book you can imagine – fiction, mysteries, classics, cookbooks, biographies—it’s a dream come true for bibliophiles and bargain hunters alike.”

The sale kicks off Thursday, Sept. 19, with the “Members Only Preview” from 5-8 p.m. Attendees must be current members of the Friends of the Library or can pay $10 at the door. Preview shoppers are limited to a total of 100 items, including 50 children’s books.

The sale opens up to the general public on Friday, Sept. 20, from noon to 8 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Then, on Sunday from 1:30-4 p.m., book buyers can pick up an entire bag of books of their choosing for just $1. Bags are provided and there is no limit on the number of bags that can be purchased.

No sales tax is charged at the sale, and shoppers can make purchases with cash and checks, but debit and credit cards cannot be accepted.

While the format of the book sale and prices are staying the same, the Friends of the Library will be instituting new guidelines to make browsing more comfortable and enjoyable for all shoppers.

“The Friends want to make sure that everyone can attend the sale easily without the jostling and discomfort that can come with being in a room full of excited shoppers,” DeLano said. “The Friends and library staff are working together to make sure that shoppers treat each other respectfully and allow others to enjoy the book sale experience.”

Staff and Friends board members will be in the rooms at the Thursday evening preview to enforce the library’s Personal Conduct Policy, which means that behavior like pushing or taking books from others likely will result a quick exit from the sale.

“We know the book sale is a very exciting event,” DeLano said. “It can be easy to get carried away, but we will ensure that everyone gets to enjoy the sale, so we are asking every shopper to do their part and treat others as they would like to be treated. If we do that, everyone can go home with their arms full of books and a smile on their face.”

In addition to making sure that shoppers treat each other courteously, the Friends have also made slight changes to the book sale layout. All children’s material will be located in one of the side rooms to allow children and families to browse kids’ books together.

The Friends of the Library collect and sort gently used books throughout the year. Donations should be brought to the Stillwater Public Library during regular library business hours. Carts and staff members are available to help facilitate unloading books. Tax donation receipts are also available at the library’s circulation desk upon request.
