Share your story at a live storytelling competition on July 25

(STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA / July 19, 2019) – The Stillwater Public Library is partnering with Modella Art Gallery to host a StorySLAM, a live storytelling competition popularized by the “The Moth.” The event takes place on Thursday, July 25 at 7 p.m. at the Modella Art Gallery.

All StorySLAMs have a theme that guide the storytellers. The theme for the July 25 event is “Space: A Universe of Stories,” which aligns with the Stillwater Public Library’s summer reading program.

“While the theme is centered on space, we are interpreting it very broadly,” said Stacy DeLano, library director. “Stories can be about outer space, outdoors, personal space, or any other way that you interpret space. We want to allow people to be creative by expanding on the topics that guided our adult summer reading events.”

There are a few guidelines. Stories must be true, told from memory and should be family friendly. Hopeful storytellers should prepare a 5-8 minute story to share with the crowd. The names of potential participants will go into a hat and will be selected at random on the night of the event. Storytellers must be at least 16 years old.

The crowd also plays an important role.

“Audience members are extremely important because they support and cheer on our storytellers,” said DeLano. “We will also be selecting a few of them at random to act as judges.”

The grand prize winner will receive a $50 gift certificate for local restaurant TS Fork.

“StorySLAM: A Universe of Stories” is free and open to the public. Registration is requested for both storytellers and participants to help facilitate seating. To sign up, go to https://tinyurl.com/StillwaterStorySlam.
