Stillwater Community United (SCU) and its member organizations invite area residents to join in remembering and celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a commemorative event and unity march.

The Commemoration will take place on Sunday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Stillwater Community Center.  The theme is "Forgetting Not Our Past in Hopes of Our Future," which was the motto for the historic Washington School on 12th Street in Stillwater. (The school closed when public education in Stillwater was desegregated.) Speakers at the event will include a member of Washington School's 1956 final graduating class, as well as a local historian who is looking to the future of the historic school building. There will also be music from local choirs as well as refreshments and an opportunity to visit with community neighbors.

The Stillwater History Museum at the Sheerar has information about the Washington School on its website. While there, be sure to check out the Black Stillwater walking tour brochure of the 'Ville created by OSU students.

The unity march will leave from Southern Woods Park on Monday, January 16 at 1 p.m. and will end at the OSU Spears School of Business. Additional activities will follow on campus. Everyone is welcome to join the march and can either travel the entire route or join in at any location along the way. Information about OSU's schedule of events, including an evening with Jay Ellis, can be found here.

Partner organizations for these events include Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Stillwater Police Department, Visit Stillwater, OSU's Division of Institutional Diversity, Stillwater Public Library, Stillwater Noon Lions, Stillwater Frontier Rotary, Homeland, and Aspen Coffee - Downtown.
